The Flight to Japan

Welcome to my detailed account of a memorable student trip to Takayama, Japan in 2023. This blog post is an exploration of my experiences and thoughts throughout the journey. Our adventure began with a direct, non-stop flight to Japan. Although enduring a 12-hour flight was challenging, the moment we glimpsed the land below was indescribable. It felt surreal to finally be in such an incredible place, especially as a student ambassador. This initial flight is an experience I will never forget.

Exploring Tokyo: A City of Contrasts

Upon arrival, we delved into the vibrant life of Tokyo, visiting unique places like TeamLab. Our first breakfast in Tokyo was a departure from the usual, featuring items like boiled eel — a stark contrast to the typical American breakfast. The bustling streets filled with countless people, yet everything was orderly; with everyone adhering to an unspoken rule of using the left side for ascending stairs or escalators, leaving the right side free for those in a hurry.

The Heart of the Trip: Takayama

The main highlight of our trip was Takayama, where I had the opportunity to live with a host family. This intimate setting provided deep insights into local life. I strongly recommend engaging as much as possible with your host family if you ever participate in such an exchange. It enriches the experience, making it unforgettable. In Takayama, we also visited a local high school, where we were warmly welcomed by an English class, receiving cheers simply for attending.

Winding Down in Kyoto

Our journey concluded in the historical city of Kyoto, where the pace slowed compared to the hustle of Tokyo. Here, we immersed ourselves in traditional Japanese culture, visiting ancient shrines and viewing historical festival floats. This part of the trip allowed us to reflect on the experiences we had gathered.

Final Reflections

Traveling, whether to Japan as I did or through any Denver Sister Cities program, is highly recommended. The experiences gained are not just for a moment but are stories to cherish for a lifetime. My experience demonstrates the profound impact of cultural exchange and the personal growth that comes from stepping into a new world.
