Even across 7,621 miles, I have discovered that as humans, our souls have the ability not only to reach each other but bind in connection. Though I struggled with the language and encountered many different cultural experiences, I found an understanding. As a Chicana, growing up in a strict household taught me the importance of building our future for the next generations and honoring the elders who didn't have our privileges. Attending the schools in China allowed me to witness how the community as a whole thrives for success as well as keeping the Cultural practices vibrant and alive. I saw how Chinese traditions are preserved and celebrated in ways that keep the spirit of the past alive while inspiring the future.
This Denver Young Ambassador program was more than just a trip; it was beyond anything I thought I could conceptualize. It reminded me of the kindness that exists in the world and strengthened my inner self. I was also able to experience a profound sense of connection and growth.
To be a part of this program is to be a part of love; to be surrounded by a second family that inspires you to uplift not only your own country but also yourself. While I could say that this experience only impacted me, that wouldn´t be entirely true. I have observed the peers I traveled with become more confident, happier, and more educated on Chinese customs and knowledge of over 20 different international countries. We had the chance to glimpse different cultures and reflect on how we, as Americans can learn and do better.
This trip matured me by showing me all the logistics it takes to travel, but on the contrary, I can also say that I am more of a kid now than I've ever been. Becoming more connected with myself and confident as a woman allowed me to nurture the young girl inside to feel secure enough to shine. It fills me with pride and hope to think that future generations of young ambassadors will have similar opportunities.
