As we approach the much-anticipated Colors of Japan 2024 trip, there's no better way to capture the essence of this unique cultural experience than through the eyes of those who have walked its vibrant paths before. Frieda Levine, a cherished member of Denver Sister Cities International, graciously shared her unforgettable journey to Takayama, Japan, with us. Her story is a testament to the profound connections and memories that await anyone who joins this year’s delegation.
A Journey to Remember
In 2022, as the world slowly emerged from the shadows of the pandemic, Frieda embarked on a life-changing adventure with a small group of 11 Denverites. The intimacy of the group allowed for deep connections—not just among the travelers but with the local Japanese communities that welcomed them with open arms.
"Traveling with a small group was a blessing," Frieda recalls. "We were able to interact with locals in ways that larger tours often can't. The warmth and hospitality we received were beyond anything I could have imagined."
Upon arrival in Takayama, the delegation was greeted with a grand banner at the train station, a symbol of the strong bond between Denver and Takayama. This warm welcome was just the beginning of a cultural immersion that included a banquet held in their honor, complete with traditional performances, singing, music, and dancing. It was a night that deeply resonated with Frieda, leaving her with memories she cherishes to this day.
Rekindling Connections and Making New Friends
One of the most rewarding aspects of the trip for Frieda was the opportunity to forge lasting relationships with the people she met in Takayama. The connections didn’t end when the plane touched down back in Denver; they continued to grow through Denver Sister Cities International's events and reunions, including a memorable gathering in October of that year.
"I’m incredibly grateful for the relationships I've formed," Frieda shares. "The bond we share with our friends in Takayama is something truly special. I’m eagerly looking forward to reconnecting with them and making new friends on the upcoming trip."
Anticipating the Next Adventure
As the 65th anniversary of the Denver-Takayama sister city relationship approaches, there’s no better time to join the Colors of Japan 2024 delegation. This year’s itinerary promises to be as enriching as ever, with stops in Takayama, Kanazawa, and Tokyo. Travelers will experience Japan’s stunning fall colors in Gifu Prefecture, known as the “Japanese Alps,” while delving deep into the rich history, traditions, and culture of Japan.
Participants will have the chance to tailor their experience through pre-trip planning meetings, ensuring that each person’s journey is as unique as they are. Whether dressing in a kimono while shopping in Takayama’s old town, savoring fresh delicacies at Kanazawa’s Omi-Cho fish market, or exploring the digital art world of TeamLabs in Tokyo, there’s something for everyone on this trip.
