Friday, October 18th marked the final day of the Denver Young Ambassadors' incredible journey at the Yunnan International Sister Provinces/Cities Youth Exchange Week 2024. This day was filled with cultural immersion, learning, and heartfelt goodbyes as the Ambassadors reflected on the week’s experiences.
Departure from Dali and Back to Kunming
The day began with a scenic train ride from Dali back to Kunming, offering the Ambassadors time to reflect on their journey so far. Upon arrival, the group shared a memorable lunch at the Fontaine Blanche Hotel with fellow Young Ambassadors from various countries. The traditional soup meal provided the perfect setting for more bonding, as the participants shared stories, laughed, and further deepened their connections.
A Visit to Dounan Flower Market and Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center
In the afternoon, the Ambassadors visited the renowned Dounan Flower Market, the largest fresh-cut flower market in Asia. The sheer scale of the market was awe-inspiring, with over 10,000 traders handling millions of flowers daily. The Young Ambassadors learned about the fascinating logistics and operations that allow flowers from Yunnan to reach markets across China and the world. They marveled at the variety—66 categories and over 300 types of fresh flowers grace the market each day. As they explored the vibrant market, they gained insight into Kunming's importance as a global floral hub, with flowers reaching as far as Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia.
Closing Ceremony at Yunnan Minzu University
The Denver Young Ambassadors then made their way to Yunnan Minzu University for the Closing Ceremony of the “Yunnan Hand in Hand Program”. Yunnan Minzu University is one of China's most prestigious institutions, fostering high-level professionals and promoting ethnic unity. With over 34,000 students and a history spanning 72 years, the university has made significant contributions to the region’s development.
The closing ceremony was an inspiring culmination of the week’s activities. Representatives from various countries reflected on the importance of youth exchange programs in promoting global understanding and cooperation. The Denver Young Ambassadors showcased Mexican-American cultural heritage through a lively performance, adding to the diverse array of presentations by youth from around the world. Local media captured the highlights of the event, ensuring these special memories will be shared far and wide.
In his closing speech at the Yunnan International Sister Provinces/Cities Youth Exchange Week 2024, Sacha Francois Heppell, Executive Director of Denver Sister Cities International, emphasized the importance of learning, teaching, and building lasting bridges between Denver and Yunnan through cultural exchange.
As the evening approached, the group gathered for a farewell dinner at the Kunming Maple Palace Hotel. It was a bittersweet moment as they reflected on the friendships they had made and the lessons they had learned throughout the week. The dinner served as a final opportunity to bond with fellow ambassadors and thank the organizers for an unforgettable experience.
