On August 26, 2024, Denver took another significant step in celebrating cultural diversity and honoring the rich heritage of the Tigrayan community. Councilwoman Shontel Lewis, representing District 8, introduced Proclamation No. 24-1112, officially recognizing the celebration of Ashenda in Colorado. This unanimous decision by the Denver City Council underscores the city's commitment to embracing and uplifting the cultural traditions of its diverse communities.

What is Ashenda?

Ashenda is more than just a holiday; it is a powerful expression of Black womanhood, sisterhood, femininity, joy, and freedom. Celebrated by Tigrayans worldwide, Ashenda is an opportunity for people of all religions and backgrounds to come together in a vibrant display of fashion, dance, music, drumming, spoken word, and various forms of art. It is a celebration that transcends geographical boundaries, bringing together the global Tigrayan diaspora and providing a platform to honor the contributions and strength of women and girls.

The festival is created by Tigray Community Colorado and has partnered with Denver Sister Cities International Axum Committee every year. Tigray Community Colorado has a great web page that explains more about Ashenda.

The Heart of Ashenda: Empowering Women and Girls

At its core, Ashenda is about empowerment. It is a celebration that uplifts women and girls in Tigray and the Tigrayan diaspora, recognizing them as pillars of strength and joy within their communities. Through the vibrant festivities, Ashenda emphasizes the importance of passing down cultural traditions from elders to younger generations. It is a time when the stories, songs, and dances that define Tigrayan identity are shared, ensuring that these rich cultural practices continue to thrive.

The Denver City Council's proclamation acknowledges the vital role that women and girls play in building and sustaining their communities. By honoring Ashenda, Denver is not only celebrating a cultural holiday but also reinforcing the values of inclusivity, respect, and community that define our city.

The Tigrayan community's commitment to each other and their efforts to build stronger global connections enrich our city, making it a more vibrant and inclusive place to live. Ashenda is not just a celebration for Tigrayans; it is a celebration for all of Denver, an invitation for everyone to come together, learn from each other, and celebrate our shared humanity.
