Ricki Garrett’s Presentation
Ricki Garrett introduced the audience to the incredible work of Sister Cities International, emphasizing the importance of the 500 in Five initiative. This ambitious program aims to connect 500 cities in Africa with cities in the United States over the next five years. Ricki eloquently explained how the new partnerships are created and highlighted the numerous benefits of focusing on Africa, including fostering mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and economic development.
Diane Withers’ Story
Diane Withers, representing La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Kumbo, Cameroon, shared an inspiring story of how a chance meeting at a conference led to the formation of their partnership. Diane detailed their remarkable success in enhancing school libraries in Kumbo, showcasing the tangible benefits of such collaborations.
Janet Lee’s Insights
Janet Lee captivated the audience with stories of our successes over the past year. She highlighted several key achievements, including the upgrade of the basketball court at City of Axum Park, successful fundraising for Kidiste Mariam Hospital, and the replacement of the computer lab at the Axumite Heritage Foundation Library. These projects have had a profound impact on the community in Axum, Ethiopia, and exemplify the positive outcomes that can arise from Sister Cities partnerships.
Looking Forward
Following the presentation they connected with international colleagues at the International Librarians Reception, where they joined 340 librarians from 51 countries to celebrate and network. Thank you, Janet Lee, for continuing to spread the message of sister cities with librarians throughout the conference. Her dedication and passion are truly inspiring, and we are proud of her representing the Denver Sister Cities International Axum Committee.
