A Warm Welcome Abroad

Hello everyone, my name is Yaritzy Calderon. I’m excited to share my experience as part of the recent group that went to Brest, France, in March. The trip was an amazing experience, starting off with my host family. I felt so welcomed; it was like I belonged in their family. They treated me like a second daughter, and I even loved sharing a birthday with their dog!

Building Connections and Sharing Cultures

Meeting new people in France, especially the host students and my fellow students from Denver, was another highlight. I built strong bonds and stepped out of my comfort zone, learning from a different perspective in a new part of the world. As a Mexican American, I was proud to share my culture with my host family. I talked about our traditions, like Día de los Muertos and the importance of family gatherings. It was wonderful to show them how vibrant and rich my heritage is, and I loved seeing their curiosity and interest.

The program saw students from both cities immerse themselves in each other’s cultures, schools, and daily lives, fostering not only new friendships but also an appreciation for international perspectives.

Gratitude and Reflection

I am so proud to be able to show how hardworking my parents are through the achievements I am doing. I am incredibly grateful to my parents for all the sacrifices they've made to give me the opportunities I have today. Their hard work and dedication have allowed me to be a part of this wonderful community, where I can grow, learn, and thrive. Without their unwavering support and commitment to my future, I wouldn't have had access to the resources and experiences that have shaped who I am. Their belief in me has opened doors I never thought possible, and for that, I will always be thankful to them and Denver Sister Cities. It has led me closer to my roots by learning to embrace how beautiful each culture is.

Overall, I’m grateful I got to give someone else a perspective of what life is like in Denver, especially as the daughter of Mexican parents. It allowed my host family to experience a different cultural perspective and understand the values that shape who I am. Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak and be here with you all today!
